Voices Carry

I had every intention of blogging about He’s Just Not That Into You, but it will have to wait.

Thanks to the relentless media onslaught, all week I was drawn into discussion about Chris Brown, Rihanna and the alleged abuse that took place on Grammy Night. There was no escaping it. It was like when I found myself disproportionately affected by Heath Ledger’s death. I didn’t want to talk about it as much as I did, but there it was continuously dropping into otherwise polite conversation.

Enter this Jay Smooth video featuring Elizabeth Mendez Berry. This is actually the conversation I want to have. It’s the conversation I wish more people were having.

  1. Well, in the meantime, both FR and Racialicious have good reviews of He’s Just Not That Into You.

That statistic blows my mind. Absolutely. This is the conversation we should all be having about this.

  3. I love this man. I’ve seen this video posted around but hadn’t gotten a chance to watch it yet, and I’m so glad I did. This is a huge public health issue, and I hope that we all sculpt the conversation around these numbers and bigger questions.

Thanks for posting this, Felice. The Rihanna/Chris Brown thing reminded me of how many YOUNG people find themselves in abusive relationships as early as middle or high school. I wrote about some interventions that were being conducted this summer:

The statistics are really disturbing. We need to do more to raise awareness. Thanks again for posting this!
