My good friend, and yoga teacher, Sarah Court, was recently featured in a New York Times article by Abby Ellin called The Enlightened Path, With A Rubber Duck. Sarah is a serious and passionate yoga teacher who knows how to laugh and play and poke fun a little. Check out her Yoga Thug videos as proof. Today, she’s ON THE COUCH WITH KIMMI:

I took a yoga class with my dad over the holidays in which we were introduced to a man we dubbed “Smelly Wilbur.” He was deeply unashamed of his farts and had flailing appendages.
Sarah I love your work. It’s the perfect mix of a commitment to the practice but a simultaneous embrace of the lightness of life.
I love the ending of this interview. Amazing.
Great post. I sometimes feel like I have to force myself to go to yoga because it is so “serious.” I put that in quotes because it sometimes seems like everyone has one eye closed in meditation and one eye open so they can check out the other ppl in the class–at least in my local yoga studio. My bro was just telling me about this place he goes to in the East Village where you can pay as much (or as little) as you want and it’s really crowded, which he says he likes because no one can tell how bad he is. I’d also love to get rid of my self-consciousness in yoga. Sarah, where do you teach???
Courtney Martin!! Do you have a fan club? May I start one?!?
Joie – Kimmi says fabulous things about you. Would love to meet you – come to class! My whole schedule is at http://www.sarahcourtyoga.com. A lot of my classes are at Equinox but even if you’re not a member I can bring you to class as my guest, so feel free to come!
And to address what you wrote – I know what you mean, and I’ve definitely taken that kind of class. I think it’s really a matter of finding a place where people are really into the practice and not there to display themselves. And in a lot of ways I think the teacher creates the environment, so it all comes down to finding a teacher that you really connect with.
I couldn’t resist watching this at work right now. I made all my colleagues gather round. Kimmi, that lovely laugh echoed against the walls.
Thank you Sarah for reminding us about joy and lightness. My boyfriend recently nudged me (again) to laugh at myself with compassion. He is remarkably good at doing so for himself; I am not so good at it. Thank you for the wild work you are doing in this community and beyond. Necessary as ever.
Yes to laughing in yoga! Yes to Anusara, heart-opening practice.
Ha! I just read this post and cracked up. Yes! I love laughter and yoga. Funny, I went to a few classes at Laughing Lotus … turns out, not so much laughing. Of course that may just have been the teachers I had or the mood the class the feelin’ those days. But at my gym’s yoga classes — so much laughter! Jeff, my favorite yoga teacher there, is hilarious. Makes us laugh at least a half dozen times in every class and I totally agree with what Sarah and Kimmi said — it takes you out of that serious concentration like “Am I doing this right?” “Am I breathing correctly” to just being Here and Now. Love it. THanks!
