Nation,
I had the great honor to curate a panel at the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art on Sunday. The best part is that the conversation that we had there–meant as a sort of performance–has actually had me thinking a lot about the state of our democracy, particularly around election time (the panel was called The American Hero, The American Dream, and was about contemporary political narratives). Ramin Hedayati, friend of CM and best friend of mine, showed this clip which he produced:
And it got us all talking about this sad reality: partisan pundits and campaign strategists pretty much run their mouths on our 24/7 news cycle, spewing resemblances of the truth, but never really being called to task on the contradictions, hypocrisy, and flat out lies. It is comedy shows, like The Daily Show, like Colbert, that are performing the lost art of the watch dog.
There is so much lost when we have a media machine that is unaccountable to the truth and its viewers. In fact, it puts our entire democracy in danger.
Anyone else know of an outlet that’s trying to keep tabs on the consistency and veracity of our government leaders and their campaigns?
This segment is amazing, Ramin. Overall, it sounds like a great panel. Sure wish I’d known about it so I could be there rather than watching Hills reruns on Sunday night. Translation: Can you two freaking tell people when you have interesting events going on?
Have you seen the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC yet?
